Kids rule

A mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child. You will want your children to settle as quickly as possible and that means finding the right schools and extramural activities. Most parents either take their children to school and other activities or arrange transport with friends or a driver. Public transport around Gabs is quite informal although combi taxis run regularly at peak times along established routes and cabs can be booked – but not in a hurry. Most parents would only allow their older teenagers to use public transport.

Broadly speaking, schools are divided into
government and private schools. Government schools
will offer tuition in a mix of English and
Setswana, whereas private schools will only use
English. Schools follow a three term programme,
with a few days variation between individual

Pre-primary institutions

About pre-primary schooling
Early childhood education is not compulsory in
Botswana and tends to be quite pricey. There are a
vast number of preschools for one to choose from -
but the best is for you to visit them with your
child to get a feel for the teaching and staff.
Certain of the private primary schools have a
preschool/reception facility – consult the list
of primary schools below.

To enrol at a private preschool (which generally
caters for ages 2-4) is a simple procedure - fill
in an enrolment form and pay your deposit! Below
are a few that have been recommended, but that’s
not to say they are right for your child – pay
them a visit and chat to other moms. Good place to
meet other moms: Sanitas Garden Centre –
Wednesdays at 10h00. (Turn at Toyota dealer at
Fairgrounds Mall – and then left onto dirt

Primary schools

About primary schools
By law, children entering government schools must
be seven, but this policy is not strictly applied
at private schools. Generally, children can be
admitted to Reception if they turn five before 31
August of the current school year.
All schools require a certified birth certificate
to be submitted along with the application.
Certain schools require applicants to do a school
readiness test before admission.
Schools usually require a registration fee, a
refundable deposit, and may also require a
development fee on top of the annual school fees.

Secondary schools

About secondary schools
There are a number of secondary schools to choose
from in Gabs and much will depend on the
educational system your child will return to or
move on to once you leave Botswana. There are
many older children who are sent to boarding
school in South Africa and word of mouth is
probably once again your best source of
information on the school that would suit your
child, should you decide on that route.
